Fair question, and worth asking before you hire anybody. Here’s my answer, including what you give up.
What changes: almost nothing
Bookkeeping runs on data that’s already digital. Your bank feeds, your card transactions, your invoices, your receipts. Your QuickBooks file lives online and doesn’t care where either of us is sitting.
Nobody drives to your office to look at a screen. That stopped being how this works a long time ago.
The work is the same work: transactions categorized, accounts reconciled to the real statements, the month closed, reports that make sense. Distance doesn’t touch any of it.
What you give up
You give up sitting across a desk. For some people that matters, and if it matters to you, that’s a real preference and not a mistake. Video calls work well now. They still aren’t the same as meeting in person.
Dropping off a shoebox stops being the routine. Receipts get photographed or forwarded instead. Most people find that easier once they’re used to it. Some don’t.
If either of those is a dealbreaker, hire someone local. That’s a legitimate answer.
What you get instead
You’re not limited to whoever happens to be nearby. In a small county, “local” can mean a very short list. Working remotely, you can choose from bookkeepers anywhere.
Nothing waits on a drive. Questions get answered the same day most days, and by my next open day at the latest.
Your records end up organized by default. When everything moves digitally, it’s already filed and searchable, and it’s backed up. Paper systems have to be maintained on purpose, and usually aren’t.
The question worth asking instead
“Local or remote” is the wrong question. These are the ones that matter:
Do they know QuickBooks? Do you get the same person every month or whoever picks up the phone? Do you own your file, or does it live in their proprietary system you’d lose access to if you left? Is the price fixed and quoted up front? Will they tell you plainly when something is outside what they do?
Those decide whether you get good bookkeeping. Not the drive time.
Where I land
I’m in Bayfield, Colorado. I work with people here in La Plata County and with clients across the country, and both get exactly the same thing, because it all runs through QuickBooks Online either way.
I work remotely because that’s how bookkeeping gets done now.
